Tips for Low Iodine Diet for Thyroid Cancer
When being treated for thyroid cancer one of the important parts for preparation is the use of a low iodine diet. This may last 1 to 2 weeks before one is subjected to radioiodine therapy. Even after the therapy the diet goes on for about two days. The aim of the diet is to starve the thyroid cells off iodine so that when the radioactive iodine is given all the remaining cells including the cancerous one will be iodine hungry thus will readily absorb the radioactive iodine which will destroy them. A low iodine diet has basically less than 50 micrograms of iodine daily. The challenge of such a diet is to make the food easy to swallow for patients and also varied. This can be achieved by changing cooking styles and altering food selection. Pureeing and steaming the foods as well as choosing soft moist foods will help.
Foods to be avoided include iodized salt and sea salt along with sea foods. Dairy foods like cheese, milk, yogurt, ice cream and butter should also be avoided for their iodine content. Other products to be avoided include chocolate, packaged breads and baked goods, soybeans and their products, kidney beans, pinto beans and most of the other beans and egg yolks. Foods allowed are fresh fruits and vegetables, unsalted nuts, honey, pasta without high iodine ingredients, fresh herbs and others recommended by the doctor.
